Who is the Engineer?

I'm Kat. By day, I'm a civil engineer, working in motorway construction in New Zealand. I left the motherland (Australia) in January 2008 to spend a year working overseas. (apparently 'a year' has different meanings to different people!)

A few years ago, a wise old man (my dad) asked me what my answer was to the inevitable question when meeting new people - "What do you do?". Of course, my reflex was to answer "I'm an engineer!" (and yes, I do always say it with an exclamation mark).

"NOOOO!" roared Dad. "If your job is all you do, there is something wrong with you! It's boring! It shows no imagination!"

And you know what? He's absolutely right.

So THAT is why I have my "other life". Hobbies stop me from being (more) insane.

  1. Kat! Holy Moly, I've just totally realised where I know you from - Monash Engineering! I ended up doing Industrial Eng, so spent years 2 to 4 on the Caulfield Campus. I work in Roads now too - but ops and maintenance for the PPPs. Funnily enough, all the guys I work with are Kiwi's! But I totally remember you from first year. Yay for sewing - it's what I do when I'm cheating on all my other hobbies :)

    1. Hahaha it's surprising where we've ended up! I certainly didn't expect to spend five years in NZ (with little likelihood of leaving).

I'm super glad to rediscover an 'old' acquaintance, and we've probably got even more in common now than before :-)

  2. Finally found the link to this site and created a blog account just so I could say hi. Hi! Been thinking about you as I inherited a Janome and impulsively bought a bunch of chiffon with the enthusiastic plan of dress making. Lets see if that ever happens!

    1. Hi!

Crikes, chiffon's not a beginner fabric... but I'm curious to see how you go with it :-)

    2. Especially a beginner with a machine that really needs its tension checked!
