Christchurch earthquake 2011

After last September's earthquake (magnitude 7.1, depth 10km), we have great devastation today with an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 at a very shallow depth of 4km.

This earthquake had an epicentre very near the city of 375,000 people.

If you need to contact someone in the short term, please try text messaging (and be patient) - the telephone networks are very busy.

Here are some links to further information.
If you have any other useful links for people, please put them in the comments.

Good luck Christchurch - we're thinking of you and will do whatever we can to help. xox

  1. The Twitterverse is telling me you can donate through the NZ Red Cross. Although their website doesn't say anything as yet, which is hardly surprising...

  2. Thanks, I had noticed the same thing. I'm sure donations will go to the right place even now, so I'll add a link and update it as needed.

  3. Good to hear from you Kat, was about to stalk you on facebook to make sure you were ok. So, so sad for everyone suffering right now. All my thoughts and love xxoo

  4. Thanks Jess - people are going to need a vast amount of support after this. You can prepare (somewhat) for a fire, a flood... but earthquakes come without warning.

We're only a small country (about 4m people), so an event like this in our second largest city is just devastating.
